In the last twelve months, three acronyms have started showing up in every ecommerce strategy deck:
- AEO, Answer Engine Optimization
- GEO, Generative Engine Optimization
- AIO, AI Optimization
If you've heard them in the same sentence as "the new SEO," you're not wrong. They're all attempts to name the same shift: buyers are increasingly asking AI what to buy instead of typing keywords into Google. And the people who own SEO tools, naturally, would like to also own the next thing.
But the analogy is doing more harm than good. SEO was about ranking pages. AEO, GEO, and AIO are not about ranking anything. Until you accept that, every dollar you spend on the category will go into the wrong bucket.
What people mean by AEO
The cleanest working definition: AEO is the practice of structuring your product information so that AI shopping systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) can confidently surface it as part of an answer.
GEO and AIO are essentially the same thing dressed in different vendor-marketing. The differences are real but small:
- AEO emphasizes "answer engines": the chat-style assistants that respond with one synthesized recommendation rather than a list of links.
- GEO emphasizes "generative engines": a broader category that includes AI Overviews, AI search results, and voice assistants.
- AIO is the most generic term, covering any optimization for AI consumption, including agent-to-agent commerce.
Pick whichever one your CMO uses at the next QBR. Functionally, they all describe the same thing: your data needs to be readable by a machine that summarizes, not a machine that ranks.
Why the SEO playbook breaks here
Search engines and AI systems look like they do the same job. Both surface products in response to a question. But they work in fundamentally different ways, and the difference matters more than most "AI SEO" guides will admit.
Search engines rank. AI systems synthesize.
When you type "best running shoes for flat feet" into Google, the algorithm produces an ordered list. There are 10 winners on page 1. Position #1 gets the most clicks, position #10 gets the fewest, and a great deal of human energy has been spent over twenty years figuring out how to climb that list.
When you ask the same question to ChatGPT, the model doesn't rank. It samples from a probability distribution over its training data and tool-call results, and produces a paragraph. Sometimes that paragraph names three products. Sometimes it names one. Sometimes it names different ones than it did five minutes ago.
There is no "position #1 in ChatGPT." There never will be. Asking which products rank highest in an LLM is like asking which song is the loudest in a symphony. The category doesn't apply.
Search engines crawl pages. AI systems read structured data.
Google built its empire by indexing HTML. AI shopping increasingly does not. When you ask Perplexity "what's a good waterproof jacket under $200?", it doesn't render your product page in a headless browser and figure out what the jacket is from the layout. It pulls from:
- structured data feeds (Google Merchant Center, schema.org, product feeds via Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Shopify's emerging AI-first product APIs)
- direct integrations with retail platforms (the Salesforce / OpenAI ChatGPT pilot announced in April 2026 syndicates merchant catalogs straight into ChatGPT shopping)
- structured product attributes that can be compared across catalogs
In other words, the page no longer matters as much as the fields. If your "waterproof rating" lives only in a paragraph of marketing copy and never in a structured attribute, the AI can't compare your jacket to anyone else's. So it doesn't.

Search engines reward consistency. AI systems penalize ambiguity.
This is the one most "AEO platforms" miss. SEO has tools to deal with messy data: synonyms, redirects, canonical tags, schema fallbacks. AI systems are far less forgiving. If your jacket has material: "shell" in one place and fabric: "100% recycled polyester" in another, an LLM can't reliably tell whether those describe the same field. It will either pick the wrong one, hedge, or skip your product entirely.
Ambiguity in your catalog reads as "low confidence" in an AI's evidence layer. Low confidence means the model defers to a competitor whose data is cleaner. You can have the better product and lose the recommendation because your data is messier.
What most "AEO platforms" actually sell
Here's the part the category doesn't want to talk about. The first wave of AEO and GEO products are mostly repackaged SEO and reputation tooling:
- AI ranking trackers. They tell you "you appeared in 12% of ChatGPT answers for
running shoes." This number changes every time you measure it because LLMs sample probabilistically. It is, mathematically, a vanity metric. - AI mention monitors. They scrape AI chat outputs and tell you when your brand is named. Useful for PR, mostly useless for catalog quality.
- Prompt-stuffing tools. They generate "AI-optimized" product copy with extra adjectives. The model still can't extract a
waterproof_rating: "20,000mm"field from prose.
None of these address the actual lever. The lever is whether your structured data is complete enough that AI can confidently use it as evidence. If it is, you'll be cited. If it isn't, you won't, and no amount of "AI visibility scoring" will change that.
What AEO actually requires
This is the boring answer that doesn't fit on a billboard, but it's the one that works:
- Structured product type resolution. Every product needs a clean, unambiguous category, mapped to a real taxonomy (Google Product Taxonomy, GS1, your own canonical type registry). "Tops" is not a type. "Women's long-sleeve performance running tee" is.
- Foundation attributes, scoped correctly. Material, size, weight, capacity, compatibility, certifications. Each one captured as a structured field, with values normalized (
"100% cotton"not"all-cotton"). Variant-scoped where it varies, product-scoped where it doesn't. - Variant matrices that match reality. If you sell three colors and four sizes, the AI needs all twelve combinations enumerated, in stock or out, with prices. Not "see store for variants."
- Commerce signals. Price (in minor units, with currency), availability, GTIN, return policy, shipping eligibility. The boring fields that determine whether the AI will actually recommend you to a buyer who wants to purchase.
- Provenance and confidence per fact. Where did this attribute come from? When was it last verified? AI systems are increasingly weighting evidence by source, and "marketing copy" is not high on that list.
Notice what's not on this list: keyword density, prompt engineering, "AI visibility scores," or anything that looks like SEO from 2014.
So what is Listwiser?
